Overall Satisfaction with Bonterra Development + Digital

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Bonterra Development + Digital for a number of things, including: organizing, marketing, donor relations/fundraising, and mobilization. It also communicates well with local voter data systems, making it easier to reach a targeted base of voters. In my position in the communications department, I use it to send emails, create sign-up forms, and share events our organization hosts. Besides social media, our website and Google Workspace, it is our #1 way to connect with our audiences.

Cons

Direct email tool is lacking in the editing department, with what feels like frequent bugs.
Email drafts should be savable as version that we can revisit.
Dual user editing is not possible. Collaborative work would be helpful.
Any advanced styling of pages and emails needs to be done by a web developer. The drag & drop editor is great but limited, as most are.

Return on Investment

Communicating with your audiences at a regular pace is a good thing, and Bonterra Development + Digital makes that easy enough to do. We see lower-than-normal open rates for our industry (per one study I read), but our overall reach is better than had we nothing. It's hard to give the credit for that to Bonterra Development + Digital.

Implementation Rating

The support team is helpful and responsive when errors arise, but there is often a 24-hour delay so urgent requests are not really a thing.

Reliability and Availability

Very rarely do I run into an issue when accessing Bonterra Development + Digital. Cookies are sometimes finicky and cause login issues. Otherwise, maintenance is normally communicated with users and I don't recall Bonterra Development + Digital being down in the recent past outside of scheduled maintenance.

Performance

I do think it has supported our efforts well to mobilize new community members. When they take an action that enters them into the system, we can track their engagement, filter out for folks who are prime for mobilizing, and engage those that are most often to take an action if we know we need a certain subset of our audience.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is a great tool overall, but it is expensive. Selling it to management to keep as an expense for small nonprofits is challenging. It is a powerful mobilization tool and often underused when compared to the price tag, however. Moreover, it is cumbersome for new users to learn how to use it and there is little in the way of video tutorials.
