A great value when considering price vs. features
Overall Satisfaction with Canto
As an over 200-year-old company with a history of catalogs and e-commerce, to say we've accumulated a lot of digital assets through the years would be an understatement. Like many others, our assets were scattered throughout different directories on network file shares, cloud environments like SharePoint and Google Drive, as well as local computers. We wanted to have a central repository to consolidate everything going forward; to assign a "librarian" to organize and curate the content; to have permissions to ensure appropriate people are uploading content to appropriate locations; and then to have an excellent way to organize the content by tags, keywords, custom properties, albums, etc. so that our team can easily find what they are looking for without wasting time looking in random file shares.
Pros
- Canto can easily add custom metadata fields and assign various tags/keywords to help organize our product photography
- We can have permissions to ensure only trained users can upload files, helping to keep our library from becoming yet another dumping ground
- Searching for content is super easy
- Sharing links to single assets or custom albums is great
Cons
- The Canto web app can sometimes be slow
- It would be nice to have more detailed section for usage rights/ownership out of the box--we have some photos that are vendor supplied and can only be used for promoting their products, other photos are from stock photography sites that have some restrictions, some are completely owned by us, and then other photos might be from customers; we are currently using tags, keywords, and/or notes in the descriptions to document this
- We are saving labor costs in time spent searching for the perfect photo.
- Canto helps ensure we use photos appropriately with respect to ownership/usage rights.
