Overall Satisfaction with Cisco 1000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 1000)

We use the Cisco 1000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 1000) as secure edge routers across our branch locations in [...], Australia. These devices are the edge connection point between the venue and the data centre. The device sends around 500Mb of data daily via a SD-WAN solution. We utlise the dual WAN feature with 4G LTE as the backup.

Pros

  • Firewall Capabilities
  • Configuration Deployment
  • Automated fail-over between WAN and LTE

Cons

  • Dual power supply
  • Missing voice gateway functions
  • Smaller VPN tunnel scale
  • Less time sending techs to site for internet relayed issues
  • Ease of configuration deployment over the wire
  • Firewall functionality included
We use Viptela for the SD-WAN solution and the platform based on vManage, vSmart and vBond is very user friendly. Zero touch provisioning is very important to us (having 500 branches across the state). The GUI is very intuitive and lets us know what devices are online and what software version each device has.
Not taking anything away from the Juniper, as they are both great products, but the Cisco 1000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 1000) is an all round good SD-WAN unit providing the ability to invoke mass deployment, incorporates a catalyst switch, has a user friendly GUI, dual WAN options (again, very important to us) and is cost effective.

Would you buy Cisco 1000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 1000) again?

Yes

In our situation, the Cisco 1000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 1000) is perfectly suited for the branch venues. It fits perfectly inside a small rack, it quiet and doesn't draw much power. It's easily connected to the network for SD-WAN deployment and centralised monitoring. Works great for regional locations, especially where we don't have an NBN connection and rely on 4G. I guess the device wouldn't be optimal in a larger user environment.
