Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst 8000 Edge Platforms
We use this for multiple purposes in different areas including SDWAN, very useful and powerful product. This has made transition to the newer protocols much easier and the level of assistance provided from cisco has been great. I would recommend this product to anyone who is looking to upgrade to the newer more powerful version of routers.
- More resources for tunneling
- Ability to use sdwan softwre
- More memory for tcam tables
- Ability to utilize T1 lines for PRI
- Ability to act as a SBC for VoIP communication
- Rfid usage
- I think that a better explanation of the capabilities would be better for beginners

- Ipsec tunneling
- Mitigated issues with prior deployment.
- Allowed us to run SDwan in our environment.

I have no looked at other platforms, this was to replace several cisco devices and it was decided to go with the same company.

Evaluating Cisco Catalyst 8000 Edge Platforms and Competitors
Yes - This product replaces various routers that had become end of life. The first was the tried and true 3945. These where used for SBC and MGCP gateway purposes. The second router we replaced was a set of ISR 4431's which we used for vpn termination. We also were able to replace a pair of Juniper router that was utilized for a tertiary connection running mpls. The ability to customize these router for various tasks and run the same code and command line is a huge plus in a industry where it is always difficult to find and hold into good network engjneers.
- Scalability
- Integration with Other Systems
- Ease of Use
The most important factor was the ability to have this be a multi purpose router. We utilize Sdwan, various voip functions such as a mgcp gateway and session border controller as well as termination of ip sec tunnels for site to site vpn's. This made the decision an easy on that we are still exited about to this day.
I don't think I would change anything it was a long process that not knly had me looking into other cisco routers but other companies like juniper, brocade, dell, hewlitt packard and arista but in the end the cisco 8000 line just offered more in terms of a multi use router that we were able to leverage for many different areas in our large network environment.
Cisco Catalyst 8000 Edge Platforms Support
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Quick Resolution Knowledgeable team Problems get solved Kept well informed Immediate help available Support cares about my success Quick Initial Response | Poor followup Need to explain problems multiple times |
I work for a large entity so there is a support contract in place that covers all products purchased. We have fantastic support and always get great response times. When tickets need to be escalated whether it be due to a critical outage or due to the current engineer needing assistance from someone more senior this is never a problem.
I was provided great sipport during an outage for our PRI's. Unfortunately sometimes we need to troubleshoot to prove that issues thst have arisen are thr issue of the provider in this case out L3 provider. Without hesitation the representative walked me through several debug commands and also showed me how to gatherogs througb rtmt. Within 30 minutes we had gone through the debugs and logs. We where able to prove that the fault lied outside of my network and then finally the other side began looking deeper into there network and later found that the had a bad card somewhere further down the line.
