Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series Switches

  • Catalyst 9500 Series
We use Cisco 9500 for our core infrastructure. They have been chosen with Cisco after consultation and advice, they are proper size and have enough performance for our needs. They are easy to configure and we have connected to them database servers and few other distribution switches and they work really well, so far no issues with software or hardware.
  • High data transfer.
  • Easy switch between nodes in redundancy/stack pair.
  • Great Cisco support.
  • Initial high cost as its Cisco and you can find other vendor much cheaper.
  • You have to buy Cisco DNA even if you do not want to use it at start which increases the cost.
  • Increased performance and future improvement.
  • Very stable network for data transfer speeds.
We do not use Cisco automation - DNA as we already use other product for automation. We have other vendor products so using this solution only on one part makes no sense. If you will be using automation from Cisco you have to be vendor lock which I do not recommend but it depends on company specific environment. Cisco build for years good switches and I hope they will stay this way.
If you are used any Cisco products it will be easy to configure them as they have the same system like years back, I'm not sure about DNA as I have mentioned we do not use it and if we could for sure we wouldn't pay for this option if there was a choice.
We have been using 6500 and 4200 which were replaced by 9500 and what I personally liked there is no multiple blades combination and no supervisor deals as there were to many dependencies on them. I also recommend Cisco nexuses as they also give good performance mainly in data center but big office will also see benefit of having them.

Communication between web servers and database servers or just doing replication of database where you need to get proper speeds so all copy in lightning fast speeds. This is how we use it and I think this is how I would recommend to use it. Also they can be used as core for your large office infrastructure.
