Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst Switches
9500s are used in our branch sites as distribution and routers. This gives us high visibility via Catalyst Control Centre as well as a highly available site core. 9200s are used across our entire environment as the access layer, both in test and production. The simplicity of setup, management and patching is enough to make the CyberSec team cry.
Pros
- Switching
- Routing
- Ease of patching
Cons
- Standardization of power supplies would be nice
- Create a module port for the end to reduce the number of models
- Smarter restarts for stacks following patching would be nice
- Cost of hardware and licensing
- Delay on shipping was bad
- Routing and backbone speeds are slower than the NEXUS series if you need serious throughput
We are predominantly a Cisco house for networking, so the risk raised by introducing the split switching was too high. We also found there are more Cisco engineers available than Aruba/HPE switching engineers. The lifetime warranty from HPE was a major factor in considering the hardware change though and the licensing cost comparison was significant as well.
