Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Nexus Series Switches

We use them for our Datacenter networking as both L2 switches and, in some cases, as L3 switches.
In some implementations I have used them as solely L3 switches in Cisco ACI Multi-Pod implementations.
The reason to use Cisco Nexus Series Switches is the multitude of speeds we can connect our servers. (1G/10G/25G/40G/50G/100G)

Pros

  • Speed
  • Data Center Networking
  • Multi chassis Etherchannel (vPC in Cisco Nexus)

Cons

  • Documentation
  • 25G connections towards servers
  • Power Draw
  • High interface speed
  • Dual connect of servers to 2 different switches (multi-chassis ethernet)
  • All interface are line rate
The small footprint in the Rack (1-2u).
Very high speed on all interfaces, very simple configuration and the possibility to change airflow of the fans and power supply letting the ports be on the same side of the rack as the servers to be connected without interfering with the cold/warm isle in the DC
Easier configuration, no need for special stack cables when using multi-chassis ether channel and extremely high speed interfaces (1/10/25/40/50/100/400/800 Gbit/s).
Cisco Nexus Series Switches is capable of both being a L2 switch and L3 switch at the same time. Possibility to configure everything via an API.

Did Cisco Nexus Series Switches live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Cisco Nexus Series Switches go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Cisco Nexus Series Switches again?

Yes

In Data Center networking is where the Cisco Nexus Series Switches platform excels.
You can change the airflow of the fans/powers upplys, letting you have the ports on the same side as the servers, letting the cabling not be as long and go from one side of the rack to the other side of the rack.

Using Cisco Nexus Series Switches

10 - We use them for multiple functions: * Data Center Interconnect in Cisco ACI Multi-pod, called IPN) and Multi-Site (ISN) solutions * Data Center Switches in a trditional VLAN fabric * Data Center Switches in an EVPN VXLAN fabric * Data Center Switches in an Cisco ACI fabric * In fabric, the Nexus switches can handle both L2 and L3
5 - Standard Networking competency, only semantic differences in most cases. There are some specific configurations for only Nexus: * vPC, this doesn't require very deep competence to configure and troubleshoot
  • Data Center switch
  • Data Center Interconnect
  • Data Center Fabric
The evolution of the Nexus switches, including speed on the ports where servers etc are to be connected (1,10,25 & 50G) , and upplik ports (up to 800G)
