Overall Satisfaction with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop)
Usage of Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD) is across the organization. Our call center agents leverage virtual desktops to complete their role with our customers and many internal teams leverage the flexibility for testing and general remote access for themselves and vendors/consultants as we are allowed to secure the workspace across a number of boundaries to ensure a strong posture while delivering a good user experience.
Pros
- Enables remote access anywhere, to any device which eliminates managing the endpoints how traditional VPN would require.
- Integrates well with modern applications to offer optimized user experiences similar to native applications which increases user acceptance.
- Extremely flexible in how policies are applied to different use cases to ensure the appropriate security mitigations are in place with minimal effort.
- Easy to maintain and expand environments to fit business needs.
Cons
- There isn't much automation built-in beyond Machine Creation Services, so you must develop a lot of your own code - though their PowerShell module is excellent.
- General monitoring is decent and has the ability to send email alerts, but the scope is very limited to mostly user experience components or requires the most expensive license level to get some additional support - though that also requires other software to be owned.
- Allowing more customizations to the "Director" support web tool would really allow for ease of use by management and help desk users in ways that simplify there workflows.
- Wide support of OS and infrastructure platforms.
- Best remoting protocol in the business for maintaining user experience across different networks and devices.
- Ability to lock down access between the users endpoint and the virtual desktop/application session.
- Visibility into user experience built into the platform.
- Being able to easily add new use cases with minimal "re-work" to existing workspace delivered by the solution has been a great ROI value.
- The Security features that are built-in have made the solution a go-to for any remote access or vendor access requests the business has needed to continue projects and expedite digital initiatives.
- While the overall environment stability is excellent there is an increase in support team and end user training required which can "steal" time from admin and engineers.
Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD) allows for the use of any hypervisor or cloud platform which ensures flexibility in decisions that are made across a IT organization while others are typically tied to a single or highly controlled cloud selection. Additionally the support for third-party tools and peripherals along with a long mature community of users has made the continued selection of Citrix an easy choice.
