Overall Satisfaction with Control-M

Control-M is global standard distributed tool across my organisation. Control-M batch operations have been implemented on all the teams in the banking domain. Different modules of Control-M have been implemented and used extensively. I have been using Control-M for 17 years, I have seen so many enhancements and improvements in Control-M versions.

Pros

  • Schedule criteria, with respect to holidays and special days...etc. Control-M tool has good scheduling capabilities.
  • Control-M is capable implement with all technologies with different modules.
  • Control-M Self service for business users and management.
  • Control-M has excellent features to integrate with other applications via Control Modules.
  • Control-M APIs are very powerful and expensive used to integrate with other applications which don't have control modules.
  • Easy to migrate from one version to other version.
  • Easy to migrate jobs from other scheduling tools to Control-M. Working on CA to Control-M.

Cons

  • Control-M application HA capability has to enhanced.
  • Looking for Control-M HA with embedded database using postgreSQL.
  • KB article has to easy to search
  • ROI is good.
  • SLA management is good
Based on stability of the application, easy to learn and use.
We recently migrate mainframe job from CA7 to Control-M due to the pricing and new features in Control-M.

2000 - We use Control-M for banking operation and 90% of banking application use Control-M for their daily batch process. Recently migrated CA7 scheduler to Control-M Z/OS.

Yes - CA7 replaced with Control-M for mainframes batch scheduling. This helps with integration of Control-M in distributed and mainframes like by sending the global conditions. Reduce the cross application dependency..etc.

Control-M Implementation

As HA we have depend on the external DB, why don't we have HA feasibility with embedded DB. As with external DB, there are performance issues and fine tuning the DB. As if its embedded DB, Control-M it self take care of the functionality.
Yes - We migrated from v19 hosted in solaris server to ver20 linux, from there moved to ver21 in linux with external DB with HA capability.
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled

Good information and well organized.
Yes, on-job training is more effective for scheduling and monitoring team. As i got the same when i started my job 17 years ago. User will get hand on experience while doing on-job training.

Configuring Control-M

Not much complex, as configuration was Stright forward and have to follow the document.
We follow the BMC document to configure the Control-M. But there are some document which BMC support person share based on the case and issue. Those information should be shared to fine tune the application for better performance and not to end up the issues.
No - there is no facility to customize the interface
No - the product does not support adding custom code
In alert windows, if the agent name column should added. Under Reporting facility more option should be provided to generate the reports easy like combination of different tables from the DB.

Control-M Support

Post recent migration to ver9.0.21.200, we are getting lot of issues. Where i used to raise case and get solution. If the issue was not high level. ITs take long time to get solution. Even though we have provided the logs. As its new version, R&D team should be look-in to this issue quickly to provide solution.

Post go-live in PROD, we encounter many issue between Apr-2024 to July-2024. During that time we got issue with new production got solution.

Upgrading Control-M

Yes - Yes due to the external DB, the DB encoding change we had issue with spl character in the old DB. Which has to clean up, took longer time to fix.Other wise upgrade was went fine.
