Overall Satisfaction with DB2

It is used for reporting, analytics and also for critical clinical applications.

Pros

  • Reporting using DPF.
  • Purescale for scalable and highly available critical applications.
  • Cost effective solution compared to other vendors.

Cons

  • Optimizer - sometimes we need to force the right access plan.
  • Support staff needs to engage more effectively by using WebEx/phone instead of emails.
  • More compatible functions to ease migration from other platforms.
  • Positive returns by retired legacy EMRs
Purescale can scale with smaller servers, we also have large Power system for analytics and reporting.
By leveraging range partitioning we have great performance with the right access plan. We have many tables with billions of rows and terabytes in size.
Very stable in AIX and Purescale cluster and can still be up when parts still fail. We have had db2 instances up for years, without any issues.
DB2 is more complicated to administer than Sybase, but it also provides many more features for applications.
Applications that require ACID.
