Overall Satisfaction with Db2

As it is used in a School setting - DB2 is mainly used in Records Management and Data Integration as it is at the heart of the School Management Systems that are used. As it is used as a central repository for all records for all contacts (which in turn feeds into our Records Management system) - it simplifies the data collection process and allows easy interrogation of the data. It allows for automation and data transformations that can drive the business to use the data in a beneficial way for long-term planning and longitudinal tracking for students.

Pros

  • Query Processing.
  • Scalabity
  • 3rd Party Data Integration.
  • Automation

Cons

  • Certain linguistic choices of SL can be confusing, "=" is not "is".
  • Better and friendlier interface (although predominantly thats a 3rd party issue).
  • Granting access rights can be haphazard.
  • Automating jobs and procedure saves countless manual entry times.
  • The enforced structure maintains data integrity.
  • Better data tracking means that the school can leverage that data to implement better systems.
The ability to use multiple schema that allows flexibility of data maintenance and testing different Views, Procedures and Functions. Being able to use SQL as a language allows for powerful queries to extract data that can be used to drive business decisions.
In the context of how I currently use it, no.
Although each are good, DB2 provides greater scalability, flexibility for data integrity.

Do you think Db2 delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Db2's feature set?

Yes

Did Db2 live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Db2 go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Db2 again?

Yes

I have primarily used it as the basis for a SIS - but I have migrated more than a few systems from there database systems to DB2 (Filemaker, MySQL, etc.). DB2 does have a better structural approach, as opposed to Filemaker, which allows for more data consistency, but this can also lead to an inflexibility that can sometimes be counterintuitive when attempting to compensate for the flexibility of the work environment as Schools tend to have an all in one approach.
