Db2 Makes Data Handling Fast and Reliable
Overall Satisfaction with Db2
I’ve used IBM Db2 since v7, then v8, and now on v11+. Started on the mainframe and later moved to UNIX. I mostly use it for OLTP and OLAP workloads, integrating with COBOL apps and handling large data processing jobs.
Pros
- the row-level locking helps me a lot in OLTP workloads without causing blocking
- i really like the way Db2 integrates with COBOL just by using the SQLCA section
- the performance and stability are very impressive, especially with near-zero downtime
Cons
- sometimes I came across compilation errors, when I try to execute COBOL codes, using the DCLGEN utility for DB2
- it’s cloud-native integration lags behind modern cloud-first databases like Aurora or Spanner
- some tasks like traces are a bit complicated beyond the need for IBM for reading and understanding
- it saves time with built-in utilities that make some tasks faster
- it reduces the need for separate analytics systems with native columnar storage
- it integrates easily with existing mainframe apps, cutting down dev effort
I really find the high availability features like HADR and Q replication useful. I like how JCL and SAS can generate data with minimal effort, also the built-in functions for job scheduling are a big plus.
I’ve been able to navigate through databases easily using cursors and fetch options. Switching from Microsoft and Adobe SQL platforms to Db2 was smooth and it helped optimize our business processes without major rework.
