Overall Satisfaction with Dell PowerConnect Switches

We use Dell PowerConnect switches with our VOIP phones, backup storage connects, etc. Some of our MDF and IDF closets have limited rack space. These switches have the capability to be stacked. They also have the POE option which we use with some of our security cameras. They tend to be easy to manage also.

  • CLI interface could be more user friendly with advanced features
  • More 10/100/1000 ports would be great
  • Proprietary features may make it difficult to switch to other vendor models
  • Great positive effect for departments with small budgets
  • Stacking capability helps with switch management
  • In enterprise environment these switches may not be able to handle processes as fast
The Dell PowerConnect switch is a great switch in certain use cases. It really works well when training users to set up their own vlans in a technology class. We have a lot of different scenarios happening at this company, with 8 different buildings and multiple different affiliate entities. For some of the departments, the budget is the most crucial element. That is where the Dell PowerConnect switches are a really great option.
Dell PowerConnect Switches were for departments with smaller budgets. We used to be mostly a CISCO shop. When CISCO changed its license model, it became very expensive so we had to look for more economical server options. At one time we were a mostly Dell shop. Cisco is great when the budget is bountiful, but today prices are so high that we have to cut back.

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000), Dell Compellent (discontinued), Cisco Nexus Series Switches
We have a couple of K-12 schools with computer labs. The Dell PowerConnect switches are perfect for classes where a lab has been set up for use by the students. It has been easy to teach the students how to manage the vlans set up for the classroom only.
The Dell PowerConnect switches may not be the best choice for our MDF or IDF closets that handle terabytes of information. These switches may not be robust enough to handle because different models may not have same options needed.
