Overall Satisfaction with Druva inSync

We are using Phoenix across 20 different sites (remote offices with datacenters). The goal was to get rid of tape backups, leverage the cloud, and use global deduplication to control cost.

Pros

  • Deduplication.
  • Customer support.

Cons

  • Enterprise-scale management interface (no patch/update management, alerting is per site, no global control options).
  • Long term backup imports (what do we do with our 10 years of data we have on tape?).
  • Vcenter migrations.
  • Simplified backup infrastructure.
Great tool if you're on standard virtualization technology (Vmware or HyperV) or use Bare Metal Intel servers. Good global dedupe and good management interface

If you are not in the Intel world (AIX / Iseries etc.), this is not going to work for you.

The biggest downside is that migrating to Druva Phoenix will not allow you to totally get rid of your tapes, tape drive, tape-library, offsite tape storage provider, backup software if you have long term retention requirements.
