Overall Satisfaction with GitHub

Initially we have started GitHub to manage our Code versioning and code reviews but later with time now we are using GitHub to manage our Infrastructure code as well, and it's used for all CI/CD processes in our organisation. It is integrated with other SaaS platforms like SonarCloud, Terraform Cloud, etc and for our Code Quality Check and for Infra Auto provisioning. Other than that we are also using GitHub for for project management and Issue tracking as well. We have recently started using it for our Artifact management as well. At present this tool is helping us out to manage alomost core DevOps activites at single platform.

Pros

  • Version Control
  • GitHub Actions for CI/CD workflows
  • Code Reviews
  • Third Party Integration
  • Issue Management

Cons

  • Project Management with tools can be improved further
  • Capability to Manage Infrastructure details
  • Release Managed can be improved further with dedicated tab at Organisation level with reference to pacjages
  • Help us out to manage out code base at center location and being easy to use by our distributed teams across India and Europe
  • Branch protection help us out to ensure our stable or release branches are well protected from any unwanted commit.
  • Pull Requests ensure that every change is reviewed, documented and owned before getting promoted to next branch.
GitHub as platform is quite effective when it comes to usability. The capabilities and featured that it offered are quite vast and helpful for team of any size and and work of any type. It makes collaboration easy for distributed teams. It helps in managing revisions, issue tracking, artifacts or package management, SAST feature make it easy to use for all major DevOps activites without switching to different tools.
GitHub comes handy in terms of usage and capabilities, it is easy to use and quite a user friendly tools when it comes to user experience, with limited UI/UX and it has vast exposure when it comes to third party integration and being quite mature and yet evolving and popular tool many other platform provide easy integration with the platform and make first choice for many tools architects.

GitHub is an easy to go tool when it comes to Version Controlling, CI/CD workflows, Integration with third party softwares. It's effective for any level of CI/CD implementation you would like to. Also the the cost of product is also very competitive and affordable. As of now GitHub lacks capabilities when it comes to detailed project management in comparison to tools like Jira, but overall its value for money.
