Overall Satisfaction with Google Authenticator
We use Google Authenticator as a tool for two-factor authentication while connecting to VPN. It is incredibly easy to set up on our smartphone and since the key updates every few seconds, the security it provides is extremely good. This is obviously a better option when compared to using a traditional OTP system for the two-factor authentication process.
Pros
- Easy to set up and transfer when switching between smartphones since it is linked to your Google account.
- Generates a random access key every few seconds which makes it safe and reliable.
- Very quick in validating and authenticating the key.
Cons
- Since the key updates every few seconds, we will have to wait for a new key to generate when the timer is almost running out for the current one.
- Long alphanumeric key which makes it secure.
- Usable in offline mode.
- Was easy to transfer between mobile device when I took a new one.
- Probably cannot complete the two-factor authentication if your phone is lost or stolen since this is highly dependent on the mobile device.
- Easy to use.
- Can use to validate multiple accounts.
Setup was easier and transferring between accounts is simpler in Google Authenticator when compared against Symantec VIP. The other features kind of are the same where both provide keys in offline mode and work seamlessly. Keys are refreshed every 30 seconds in both the providers with long keys which make them secure.
