Overall Satisfaction with Google Sheets

We are a small company where Google Sheets is our go to tool for various objectives that don't need any complex software yet. We mainly use this to track project permission matrix, all the resources costs associated with it.
We also use the same tool to track different changes that are done in our office along with a separate ticketing tool.

Pros

  • Collaborative planning : In the initial phase of project, Team leads and architects create a permission matrix along with the naming convention simultaneously, seeing who is editing / adding the details in real-time.
  • Cost tracking : We use this tool to track cloud resource usage monthly costs, so that we can analyse it and send out comms for high cost based resources. By storing cost data here, it's easy for use to store data of last couple of years.
  • Flexible documentation : For change logging of different scenarios we would need different / ad-hoc columns to be added on the fly, which makes using this tool much simpler then reputed third party tools.

Cons

  • Performance issues : For change logging once we start hitting a few thousand rows of data, the sheet starts to lag while scrolling or filtering.
  • Auditing could have been simpler : Figuring out who changed which cell, requires some time effort, specially when multiple people are working on a same tab where multiple inputs are being written.
  • Time savings : Instead of emailing excel files back and forth, multiple team members work on the same file, saving a lot of time.
  • Cost savings : Instead of relying on third party paid - licensed software's, we built it around the Google Sheets which saved us good chunk of cost.
I gave it a 9 because it requires very minimal to no training! required person in the team can simply open the Google Sheets and start contributing. This is really crucial for a small company like us. No need to install any software, just login from your Laptop / Mobile to Google Sheets and start working!
We initially used OpenOffice Calc as it is open source & free. However sending the files back and forth was a nightmare. We switched to Google Sheets purely for the real-time collaboration, where we can see live activities, get the required inputs instantly. It also has version control, meaning restoring to the older version is much easier.

Google Sheets is perfectly suited for collaborative documentation, it's been really easy for us in situations like cost tracking, permission matrix etc, where no complex third party tools needs to be setup! Just sign in with your google account, and start doing effortless work. But keep in mind about it's performance, it's not so suitable for thousands of rows worth of data as it will start to become sluggish.
