Overall Satisfaction with IBM Apptio

I work on behalf of organizations that use Apptio for cloud financial management and RI/SP optimization for cloud spend. Primary use case is on ensuring a viable FinOps strategy that provides flexibility with robust controls as usage ramps up organically, via M&A and/or product launches.

Pros

Cons

  • Overly complex for smaller companies in the startup or SMB space
  • improved governance across IT and lines of business

We've started to recommend using forecasting for budgeting purposes but prefer our in-house tooling for those functions

Apptio works well in the context of larger organizations with a strong financial governance process but adapting to manage FinOps in a cloud native world. However, the cost and complexity of the product is not ideal for a startup or SMB organization that often bring cloud native expertise in-house or don't require the same level of feature parity as smaller, more nimble competitors.
