Overall Satisfaction with IBM Cloud Databases (formerly Compose)

We primarily use PostgreSQL, Elastic, Redis, and Mongodb for our applications.

Pros

  • Easy to provision
  • Auth with certs

Cons

  • Replication
  • More features than just the open source versions
  • HIPAA compliance
  • No replication, so we needed to develop our own DR strategy which isn't foolproof.
  • On a positive note, they are easier to provision and use in our applications.
Cloudant is HIPAA compliant and replicated out of the box. We recommend use of Cloudant vs Mongodb for that purpose. We use Redis only as a session cache.
They are well suited for simple use cases, but lack in bigger use cases. Easy to provision, and no issues with administration which is abstracted out from the users. They are mostly open source based and lack in features.

Hello,  This is Shannon from IBM Cloud, thanking you for your review of IBM Cloud Databases.  IBM Cloud Database services are HIPAA-ready like Cloudant, https://cloud.ibm.com/docs/services/databases-for-postgresql?topic=databases-for-postgresql-security-compliance,  and highly available over at least 2 availability zones in a region with database level replication. In a multi-zone region, all backups are stored in IBM Cloud Cross Regional Object Storage making your backups resilient to regional outages. Backups can be restored into any IBM Cloud region where our database services are available.  For Databases for PostgreSQL, we offer Read Replicas and Point in Time Recovery to help with disaster recovery and business continuity, but those features are not yet available for Redis, Elasticsearch, and MongoDB. You can learn more here https://www.ibm.com/cloud/blog/disaster-recovery-planning-with-ibm-cloud-databases-for-postgresql.   If there any other features you need, just drop us a line at IBM Cloud support https://cloud.ibm.com/unifiedsupport/supportcenter.  Thanks!
