Power Systems Virtual Server on IBM Cloud for AIX/Linux

Overall Satisfaction with IBM Power System Virtual Server

Mainly used for high-end computing environments like seismic explorations, data processing, hosted mission-critical ERP, and internal in-house applications focus on business requirements in the field of oil and gas. In
addition, we have hosted high-end Power servers as an HPC to cater to the
needs of huge processing power. As part of data protection, we have an AIX
environment for the backup environment I would like to
highlight the savings on Oracle licensing cost while operating on
Power Linux virtual environment, this addresses our long pending issues
and achieves significant cost savings.

Pros

  • Seismic environment, which comprises a mammoth amount of data using IBM GPFS and AIX Power virtual servers.
  • HPC environment, which is a reliable and most trusted computing setup mainly focuses on oil exploration, finding the analytics, a handy tool for upstream explorations.
  • In-house applications and ERP applications works like a champ.

Cons

  • Mainly, few applications can not be directly supported/hosted on the Power Linux environment.
  • Allowing multiple distributions to support and run smoothly on Power hardware.
  • More intrusive integration with POWER VC to leverage full-length features of Openshift and other cloud-native features.

Do you think IBM Power Virtual Server delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with IBM Power Virtual Server's feature set?

Yes

Did IBM Power Virtual Server live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of IBM Power Virtual Server go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy IBM Power Virtual Server again?

Yes

  • Saving cost of procuring licenses for Oracle environment.
  • Consolidations are the key in the modern infrastructure environment, IBM power helps to utilize the gigantic computing power.
  • Datacenter space, cooling, and power are some of the most significant savings, approximately 65-70% savings compared to our previous environments.
IBM Power environment is more neutral when it comes to supporting OS and application features, whereas Oracle Sparc is more tuned/designed towards the compatibility of their own applications and operating system. IBM Power is sleek in design compared to Oracle Sparc M9000, at the same time, it delivers more powerful computing compared to its peers.
One of the best features is a single pane of management of multiple servers, this helps our globally located team to manage the environment from a single console and at the ease of doing health checks at blaze speed.
Power Virtual environment is one of the Robust and peace of mind architecture hosted in the environment, its well-integrated between hardware and the OS environments makes them stand apart from the crowd. They are mainly used in high-end computing environments in oil exploration, where a huge amount of computing is needed to complete the process on time and deliver the projects and get ready for oil extraction. As the TCO is comparatively high, it's advisable to use it mainly for mission-critical applications and harness the real power of the IBM Power Virtual environment.
