Overall Satisfaction with IBM SPSS Statistics

I run the insights division of a market research company. Several members of my team use SPSS to process and analyze data. Honestly, I avoid using SPSS as much as possible. It is an antiquated piece of software that has a difficult-to-use interface and syntax (coding) system. Additionally, it does not do data visualizations, so if we are developing a client report, we get to enjoy the tedious and time-consuming process of manually creating every chart, graph, table, and number in our reports. The ONLY reason I gave SPSS a rating of 3 is because sometimes it is the only tool I have for working on legacy studies. Eventually, I plan on migrating these studies away from SPSS and onto a platform that was designed after the year 2000.

Pros

  • Merging data files.
  • Cleaning data files.
  • Frustrating its users.

Cons

  • I feel their licensing is terrible.
  • Their syntax differs from every other programming language out there and is difficult to find information on (even using AI).
  • They do not incorporate any data visualization processes.
  • r is free and more powerful
  • It frustrates my data analysts because no one uses it any more (everyone uses r).
  • It consumes my time, because I am one of 2 people in a 100+ person organization who remembers how to use it, so any time a person needs help I have to dig into the depths of my memory.
  • Their licensing is over-priced and upsets my managers and accounting team.
I feel that the response to the previous question answered this, but basically, SPSS is a net drain on our company. Only 1-2 people out of 100+ in our organization have used SPSS. All of our data processing and analytics teams have moved on to something else that is more user-friendly, powerful, and cheaper. This means that in the rare cases where we need to use SPSS, it slows down the entire process, and I have to spend my time remembering how to use it.
I will say that SPSS has improved our decision-making process and opened us up to new opportunities. After exploring the power of other statistical packages, it was a very easy decision-making process to move away from SPSS actively. Its antiquated methods led us to search for and identify other opportunities that have significant advantages and are cheaper.
If you have made it this far, you should have a very good idea of how SPSS stacks up the competition (data processing and analytics tools). Even the free ones, such as r Studio or Stata, are leaps and bounds ahead of SPSS. IBM is resting on a reputation developed nearly 30 years ago and has shown no desire to improve.

Do you think IBM SPSS Statistics delivers good value for the price?

No

Are you happy with IBM SPSS Statistics's feature set?

No

Did IBM SPSS Statistics live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of IBM SPSS Statistics go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy IBM SPSS Statistics again?

No

I described earlier that the only scenarios where I use SPSS are those where we have legacy projects that were developed in the late 90s or early 2000s using SPSS, and for some reason, the project (data set, scope, etc.) hasn't changed in 24+ years. This counts for 1-2 out of around 80 projects that I run. Whenever possible, I actively have my team move away from SPSS, even when that process is painful.
