Overall Satisfaction with Linode
We use Linode for hosting a number of sites ranging in scale. The flexibility of the servers with known fixed pricing is really useful and allows us to plan well in advance. Additionally the speed with which we can spin up new servers allows us to scale for short-term spikes in traffic in a managed way.
- Customer support is always fast and knowledgeable.
- Pricing is competitive.
- The web UI is easy to navigate.
- Sometimes I'd like to be able to specify more configured options for a virtual server.
- Bandwidth out--should be less of concern these days.
- Linode just gets out of the way and lets us do our thing. I'd guess that's a positive ROI but we've not measured it in any meaningful way.
- DigitalOcean Droplets and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)
AWS is more expensive and less predictable. I get the feeling AWS might scale better for huge sites but cannot say for certain. DigitalOcean Droplets seems to be on a par with Linode, and cost-wise they are very similar. I've tried using Thema few times but always come back to Linode, as their interface just seems a bit easier to me.
Total cost of ownership isn't something I'd share publicly. The value provided is not having to think about hosting on a day-to-day basis.
Uptime is the same for any online business, totally crucial. Linode always meets (or exceeds) expectations on this. We've only had downtime a few times in 12 years across a number of servers. There have been a couple of short, planned outages that we were notified of in advance. Although less than ideal, they are infrequent and well within what we'd expect for the pricing.
