Overall Satisfaction with Meltwater Media Intelligence Platform

As part of the Public Relations/Communications team we use this tool a lot. We mainly use Meltwater to track the news coverage we receive over a variety of media outlets and keep track of our overall media presence. They have a number of functions that pull specific articles HMSHost is mentioned in as well as other key aspects of our business (ex. Starbucks is our biggest client so we would also track Starbucks news). Allows us to track how we are viewed in the public and maintain a positive reputation.
  • Track media outlets where HMSHost is mentioned in real time.
  • Provides a database of contact information similar to cision where you can compile media lists.
  • Allows us to integrate a specific feature with our corporate website which pulls relevant news articles directly to our press page.
  • I've noticed that Meltwater sometimes doesn't pick up on coverage for more lowkey sites and publications. We frequently receive coverage on some larger blogs that slip through the cracks.
  • I think it could be a little more user friendly. I know there are a ton of functions that I'm not even making use of which is a shame. These functions aren't as easy to pick up on though. I usually use the same resources all the time.
  • I've noticed that sometimes the site can be extremely slow/when you click to another page it takes quite a while to load. I know this is the case for others too so it isn't just the computer.
  • It has had an overall positive ROI in terms of managing the media relations component of the communications department. It makes cultivating relationships with valuable media contacts very seamless.
  • Also has had a positive ROI in allowing us to show clients and customers all the hype HMSHost is receiving in the media and show that we are growing.
Meltwater is definitely a more versatile tool than Cision. Cision's main purpose is to search for media contacts and create media lists, which it does a really good job of. I'm very comfortable with Cision which is why I use it even though Meltwater has this feature in addition to the media tracking that it is known for. But Cision is very one-sided whereas you can do a lot more things with Meltwater.
I think it is very useful for exactly what I use it for which is to track media coverage. Despite the fact that some more obscure publications aren't detected I think it does a good job of monitoring overall buzz, measuring our most popular publications, and calculating valuable analytics. It provides a variety of different metrics to analyze the data it's gathering in different ways.
