Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Power BI

Power BI is mainly used in the Marketing/BI group by analysts. Its main use is to dig into various datasets in order to find answers to various questions directors and VP may ask. Power BI is not really used to produce dashboards but more for reporting (for ad-hoc queries). For example, if there is a specific promo code being used on a given day more than normal, we will use Power BI to investigate patterns from users that have entered this problematic promo code to see if it's legit or not.
  • Easily connect to multiple databases or cloud solutions.
  • Possibility to modify datasets or change formatting in Power BI vs having to modify data at the source.
  • Since Power BI can cache locally some of the data, it's possible to continue working offline on datasets.
  • A bit heavy to run and not that intuitive compared to other tools.
  • Dashboarding is really a pain compared to other tools and the visualization provided with the tool are not what you should expect.
  • Very very frequent updates that require you to reinstall the software almost on a monthly basis. Will need admin rights from your organization.
For dashboarding, Klipfolio is vastly superior. I use Power BI to get quickly to the data I need to display in a dashboard. Once I tested everything in Power BI, I will pull the datasets in Klipfolio to create a dashboard that will refresh automatically every hour, for example.
For Oracle and Microsoft SQL database, it works perfectly. I wish connectivity for cloud platform was more complete. Also, maybe it's now available, but before it was not possible to connect data from an Excel file.
If you have the full licenced product, it's quite easy to share and work collectively on Power BI. The free version, however, does not have these capabilities and will often let you think you can share something just to prompt you with a purchase licence dialog. I see users sending the Power BI file by email but these files are huge and if your colleague has a different version of Power BI than you, it may never be able to open it or run some of the visualizations.
Perfect for ad-hoc reporting but don't use this software for dashboarding automation. Klipfolio will do a better job for your dashboards.
