Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Power BI

Microsoft Power BI is used by the entire IT department and by other users with personal objectives, like Excel. Power BI is used on top of other software to create business models where the software standard reports do not cover our needs and to integrate diverse data source coming from diverse software.
  • Create data models.
  • Use dax language.
  • Manage production and test environments.
  • Build and share model incrementally.
Microsoft Power BI is integrated with Excel, PowerPoint and also Flow or Power APP. It is possible to use Excel to analyze a Power BI model; report build with Power BI can be downloaded as Excel format. Report and pages can be exported in PowerPoint format and PDF also. The integration with Flow and Power App enable interesting scenarios.
Power BI offers a lot of data sources and also real-time data connection, out of the box. For in-house data, a data gateway is necessary and the usage is very simple and reliable. It is possible to schedule data refresh. There is also a two-level data management using dataflow feature.
For my experience, collaboration in a factive way requires a PRO license. In this way, you can share reports and dashboards with other authenticated users or give them rights to manage the data model. The tool allows also to publish reports with free-to-all access.
From a collaboration point of view, there aren't many useful functions. From a security perspective, you can work to a report level or with row security level it is possible to segregate data to different clusters of users.
Microsoft Power BI is easy to learn and use. With a little effort, you can integrate a lot of different data sources and, very importantly, you don't need to have a big infrastructure, thanks to Microsoft Cloud. It is also well suited for personal use, to extend Excel functionalities and analyze big amount of data.
