Nakivo Backup and Replication: a great solution even for small infrastructures

Overall Satisfaction with NAKIVO Backup & Replication

We use Nakivo Backup & Replication to back up a customer's VMWare-based infrastructure: two ESXi nodes with ~15 VMs and a NAS to store their data. We needed something easy to implement, suitable for a small but growing infrastructure, and with a license model that could fit our not so huge budget.

Pros

  • Great integration with VMWare
  • Ease of use
  • Great tecnichal and commercial support

Cons

  • Nothing to report. I never had issues with this software.
  • Ease of backup monitoring
  • Single vendor to interact with
I never really had major issues, so I cannot speak for this kind of support request, but every time I had either technical or commercial doubts the support was just an email away. Both supports are quick and effective. When I had issues understanding the licensing model, a representative offered to call me and explain every detail via video call.

Do you think NAKIVO Backup & Replication delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with NAKIVO Backup & Replication's feature set?

Yes

Did NAKIVO Backup & Replication live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of NAKIVO Backup & Replication go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy NAKIVO Backup & Replication again?

Yes

Once you understand how Nakivo Backup and Replication works (you can find is plenty of documentation online), the user interface is pretty clear, the wizard walks you through the configuration procedure and you don't really have any particular doubt. The recovery as well is straightforward, nothing to point out here.
I contacted a few times Nakivo representatives, once for technical doubt and the other ones for commercial ones. Both support services are fast and reliable.
Our customer has a small infrastructure, so we could make good use of the "one-shot" Nakivo license. Our customer does not need to pay a fee every year (although you are requested to pay a subscription in order to have updates and support, that is only fair) and we could grant them a top-notch product.
Nakivo Backup & Replication worked just fine in the above scenario. I don't have experience with larger infrastructures, but you can see you can add plenty of VMs, jobs, and destinations. You can recover both whole VMs and single files\directory and you can even balance the workload using multiple "transporters".

Using NAKIVO Backup & Replication

2 - Technical customers support
2 - Knowledge of VMWare, networking and Linux OS
  • VMWare infrastructure with 2 nodes and several Windows and Linux VMs
  • Whole VM and single directory\file recovery
  • We now have a tool that makes it easy to acquire new customers with VMWare based infrastructures.
I already renewed our customer's license for one year of updates and support provided by the Nakivo Team.

Evaluating NAKIVO Backup & Replication and Competitors

Yes - Before Nakivo we didn't really back the whole VMs up and only relied on directories\files backup via automated scripts.
  • Price
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
  • Prior Experience with the Product
A consultant pointed us towards Nakivo due to his very positive experience and that was the key reason we picked it.
Yes and no.
No - We now use Proxmox Virtual Environment + Proxmox Backup Server for almost all our customers. Nakivo does not work with Proxmox VE, nor it has any reason to, since Proxmox BS integrates smoothly with PVE.
Yes - If I were to acquire a customer with a pre existing VMWare based infrastructure I would definitely choose Nakivo Backup and Replication again.
  • Iperius Backup and Acronis Advanced Backup (formerly Cyber Backup Cloud)
Nakivo seemed more "solid" than Iperius Backup (even if we use it for tiny customers), was more affordable than Acronis and our partner had been using it for a while and was very satisfied.

I didn't, but now that the support license is expiring I had no doubt whatsoever when they asked me if I was going to renew it.
I found the licensing model pretty hard to understand and I was struggling to find what was the right thing to buy. A Nakivo representative contacted me and spent over 30 minutes on the phone with me pointing me in the right direction.
