Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
I work for the CardinalCommerce division of Visa; our ecosystem is currently separate. We are currently in the process of migrating our environment from RHEL 7 and CENT OS over the RHEL 8. Our servers are probably setup 50/50 in Windows and Linux. My team manages all of these servers. I can say with confidence that our RHEL servers have far fewer issues than our Windows servers. The RHEL servers are easier to deploy and patch.
Pros
- Security Patches are consistent
- RHEL Servers are VERY easy to deploy compared to their Windows counterparts
- Automation works better with RHEL
- Red Hat support is very knowledgeable and helpful
Cons
- I would like to see RHEL become a little more user friendly in certain aspects --- I don't want to lose functionality but there is room for improvement
- Moving from one version of RHEL to another version a RHEL needs a TON of improvement. It is MUCH easier to migrate a Windows 2016 server to a Windows 2019 server than it is to migrate any version of RHEL to another version of RHEL
- RHEL is preferred over Windows & other options --- they are far easier to deploy and to patch
RHEL is the most reliable and what our organization prefers
