Overall Satisfaction with S&P Capital IQ

My firm uses S&P Capital IQ primarily as a centralized source of financial information that can be incoporated into various business models. We use it for market analysis, competitive analysis, assessing supplier and customer financial health, and business planning. S&P Capital IQ offers more features for financial professionals who are tracking market movements, but those are of less relevance to my work.

Pros

  • Good source of financial data
  • Intuitive interface
  • Easy to download data and access through an Excel plug-in
  • Good firm and industry coverage

Cons

  • In my experience, customer service is really lacking. Account manager has been a ghost
  • In my opinion, S&P support staff not empowered to solve problems. They don't think about issues, just look at the handbook. It's like talking to a wall at times
  • Base set of features in the account is ok, though be prepared to pay for any additional features such as market reseatch reports
  • It enables us to perform more in-depth analysis of firm's who we might be interested in working with
  • Enables us to assess how well are competitors are doing at a very high-level
  • Can view who is investing in what types of firms
The interface is intuitive. It is a little cluttered and looks like it was designed over 15 years ago, but I think they probably keep it consistent for the sake of log-term users. It generally isn't too difficult to find information on a particualr topic since it has a search bar. It's also each to download relevant pieces of information into a Word or Excel file
I think Eikon is a close substitute. It doesn't have as many features as S&P Capital IQ, but unless you're working for a bank, hedge fund, or in corporate treasury, you probably won't notice it.

In my opinion, FactSet is another good alternative. It comes with more features included in the base package than Eikon.

In my experience, both platforms are easy to use and have good customer service.

Do you think S&P Capital IQ delivers good value for the price?

No

Are you happy with S&P Capital IQ's feature set?

Yes

Did S&P Capital IQ live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of S&P Capital IQ go as expected?

No

Would you buy S&P Capital IQ again?

No

If you need access to a large data set of financial data as well as some basic summaries of what a firm does, they can meet your needs. They have multiple add-on features for those who need to do more in-depth analysis on financial instruments. If you don't need to do maket analyses, or need very in-depth details about a particular industry, then they aren't as good of an option
