My Journey with SAP Business Technology Platform

Overall Satisfaction with SAP Business Technology Platform

We are using SAP Business Technology Platform throughout a lot of our Business processes. We are heavenly using SAP Integration suite with SAP CPI to connect to 3rd party solutions, SAP API Management to open up to external customers. Despite of that we are using the Extension Suite for our Clean core projects to build side by side extensions on ABAP Cloud and providing these on the SAP Workzone. The problems are currently that our developers coming from the "old world" and need additional skillsets we have to build up. Furthermore the business does not fully understand why old GUI transaction are rarely used in the future.

Pros

  • Integrating our SAP System with the outside world
  • Providing a solution to keep our core clean with ABAP Cloud
  • Provide a launchpad where you can open Apps from a central place and collaborate with other colleagues

Cons

  • For me the generated Fiori Apps on ABAP Cloud for maintenance are hard to use. Additionally translating objects in ABAP Cloud via the corresponding Fiori App is not user friendly
  • SAP API Management could use a zoom function in the policy editor. It's hard to see every policy when you are working on your laptop

  • We are more open for the outside world
  • Some skill set is missing and hard to build up for all developers
Currently we are building a customer portal where we allow access from the outside world for external customers and internal customers. It was pretty easy to replicate data from our onPrem system via Event Mesh, API Management and RAP APIs to our ABAP Cloud. There it was easy to build a Fiori Elements App. With the deployment on the SAP Workzone it was easy to grant access to external customers via an external IAS Tenant and internal colleagues via another IAS based on Azure AD and user provisioning on SAP Business Technology Platform.
We are in direct contact with responsible persons at SAP. When we have a question regarding a service or functionality we will directly get help to move on with SAP Business Technology Platform Developments. That is important because SAP Business Technology Platform is heavily involved in our IT Strategy.

Personally, I think it is more state of the art and a good solution for building new applications/solutions. You can easily connect to the outside world and it provides a large toolset for various things a Business needs today. And fortunately, there is a large community when you have questions. You will find something on the internet. Nevertheless, I find it bad, that some solutions change so drastically and quickly. Once you adopted there is a new service.
