Overall Satisfaction with SAP Business Technology Platform

Use SAP Business Technology Platform for devops, HANA cloud, and integration suite. Devops has custom applications access by external partners for ordering, status checking, and information inquiries. HANA cloud for storing local information that do not need for enterprise transactional reporting. Integration suite for file base exchange and API management with backend S/4 and external systems. Scope is enterprise level.

Pros

  • API communication to S/4
  • Devops flexibility working with other standard industrial leading services, such as as azure devops
  • HANA cloud for storing local info with acceptable performance and common platform as s/4 and BW4HANA

Cons

  • Pricing of services are sometime confusing
  • UI 5 and NODE.js version upgrade cause constant rework
  • Lacking of clear and robust logging mechanisms
  • Still using traditional devops instead of using build. Very high cost in development.
  • Still using Node.js instead of REST ABAP. Additional cost of resources. Migration of current CAP to RAP will be costly and do not have a business case yet. Continue with multi-language is costly.
  • Integration suite is power but the migration from PIPO to IS has been more challenging than being advertised.
Overall, I feel it is build toward as an SAP centric platform. Which is very proper direction for SAP as it is their competitive advantage. However, as a customer, I like to see the cost of the services to come down with the advance of underlay hardware capabilities. Licensing model can be streamlined for easier budgeting and consumption.
Very similar to other SAP product in terms of support experience. Once you got to the right team, they will fix and / or advise the work around properly. Sometimes it seems like it takes forever to reach the right team. Another challenge is number of times we have to repeat the issues to different groups, and the number of times we have to capture logs.
I have seen but not used the use cases
SAP Business Technology Platform won us over mainly due to the need for integrating back to the S4 back end. The ease of connecting via SAP cloud connector were the go to reason. Once we get to understand the functions of the service and the potential future, it helps to increase the scoring against other existing platforms our company is using.

Great for tight connection with SAP product. Still not sure the business case for building non SAP ecosystem. Especially comparing with more common hyper scalers such as AWS and Azure. Great business case for anything what will CRUD with SAP services. Less clear or business case always become less competitive when only non SAP components involve. That mostly due to cost of the services.
