Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager

It is being used by the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Department. It is used for automated configuration backups, baselining, and basic status alerting. We are also trying to implement some automation scripts for periodic password changes and access control list updates. Our network is medium-sized and segregated.

  • Backup configurations
  • Organize devices
  • Maps could use some improvement. Make it easier to document the network and view status.
  • Scripting is another area where it can improve. Maybe have a UI with drag and drop.
  • Saved about 1,200 man-hours yearly by automating backup and restore process, baseline.
  • Saved and additional 200 man-hours by sending alerts of the specific device that failed and also change control notifications.
Device42 Did not feel like a complete solution and was lacking in a lot of areas. I know it is a new competitor in the area, but they still have a long way to go.
Well suited for enterprises that have many managed network devices, are looking for a solution for automated configuration backup and restore, and need to do basic compliance checks. Currently, it is not suited for advanced security analysis, more specific compliance checks, and automation.
