Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We used BI Manager to develop and maintain all of our ETL packages.

Pros and Cons

Easy to use GUI
Integrates nicely with SQL Server
Simple single server deployment

Lacks versioning control.
Lacks support/native driver for alternative database.
Only plays well with other Microsoft products.

Return on Investment

Allows us to quickly set up ETL processes as soon as we installed SQL Server.
There's a lot of free/paid resources available online, decreasing development time.
A tool with plenty of experienced developers.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Redshift, Matillion and RedPoint Data Management & Quality

SQL servers are much easier to set up than the others but they lack the customization and integration with other popular DB.

Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server, Tableau Prep

Likelihood to Recommend

BIDS works well if you're committed to using all MS products. It does take some serious consideration if you know you will end up working outside of that, such as working with AWS products.
