Overall Satisfaction with Tableau Desktop

  • Mapping.
  • SQL data extraction.
  • Quick filters.
  • The maps do not work unless your computer is connected to the internet; if the data is showing an extract why do I need to be connected to the internet
  • An easier way to learn the Tableau code to build your own equations. You can google or buy SQL coding, VBA, etc. but you cannot easily find Tableau coding.
  • An easier way to lock down the tabs used to make the dashboard.
We purchased the product 4 years ago, and have continued to renew our current contract since then. I explain the tool as SQL, Access, Excel and MapPoint all in one. This tool has been a blessing for our group within the company as it allows us to quickly and easily manipulate the customer's data into an insight generating tool. The down side we have is the inability to install the software due to administrative restrictions to the hard drive. Purchasing the Server would correct this, but the ROI has yet to balance in our favor due to our small volume. Programming the tool is easier than it looks. I hope in another year or so, the programming will be easier to access so that other team members could learn themselves. We use the tool on a weekly basis to quickly answer customer questions and find insights to help the customer grow their business and create changes before there is a problem.
I would definitely recommend the tool to anyone who needs a way to view extra-large data sets. There are different product versions depending on who, what, and how people are going to use the tool. The key questions to review are: How many users do I have? How many programmers do I have? How are my users going to access the tool? Do I want to allow different permissions to the dashboards? What data sources am I going to link to the tool?

1 - I support the users of the Tableau Destop versions. I have the Desktop professional series that allows me to connect the software to SQL where the data is housed for current and archive purposes. The programmer should have skills or experience in multiple programming languages, a good understanding of customer products and needs, experience working between business units and customers to move from customer needs to programming those into the tool, also the ability to innovate to be proactive of function enhancement to provide the customer what they didn't even know they needed.
