Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are a reseller and a couple of our clients use it. We backup all servers and replicate them to another device at the same physical location. Anytime we have ever needed to restore an individual file or entire system, we have always been successful. It's a great solution for backups and BDR, even though we only replicate within the same physical locations. I believe Veeam only works for VMware though, not Hyper-V (unless that has changed) so it will not work for all organizations.

Cloud replication very expensive
Need to purchase hardware as well as software in order to use it

Return on Investment

Positive impact is easy restorations of single files and entire systems
Negative is that if the replicated files are in the same physical location and a disaster happens, those files are likely impacted as well

Alternatives Considered

Barracuda Backup

Our clients that use Veeam were using it before they were our clients, but we renew when appropriate. Veeam is a solid product, but I believe Barracuda is better all around. Lower cost, VMWARE, Hyper-V and physical server backups. Also, Barracuda offers cloud replication at a much lower price point.

Other Software Used

Symantec Backup Exec, Carbonite Server Backup, Datto

Likelihood to Recommend

Clients that are smaller but using VMWARE, in my eyes, would be the ideal client. If you have a lot of servers and not a lot of bandwidth, this would likely not be a good solution to use. Multi-site clients that could replicate between sites would also be a good fit.

This review is really completely inaccurate; so much so I'd question the actual degree & depth of experience the author says they have with VEEAM. I've deployed VEEAM on a couple of projects - one of which I worked daily on VEEAM for 15 months - and I can testify that the review is mostly wrong in what it states about VEEAM's capabilities. Furthermore, in my experience having worked with Backup Exec, NetBackup & others, that VEEAM is probably the best DR / backup solution I've come across. To address the review's inaccuracies, the author states 'I believe Veeam only works for VMware though, not Hyper-V (unless that has changed) so it will not work for all organizations'. This statement is simply wrong, as VEEAM's was designed almost from the beginning for, & works equally well with, Hyper-V. https://www.veeam.com/backup-version-standard-enterprise-editions-comparison.html This inaccuracy is further compounded & directly contradicted by the almost meaningless statement in the Cons below 'I do not believe it works on VMWARE or physical servers'. Does the author mean 'virtual or physical servers'? Either way, this statement is simply untrue. The MAIN visualized infrastructure it's designed to work with is VMWARE (alongside Hyper-V)...and it does work with / can be installed upon either virtual or physical servers. https://www.veeam.com/backup-management-tool-vm-physical-cloud.html Another faux pas is the statement the author makes as the last of their Cons - 'Need to purchase hardware as well as software in order to use it'. Again, this is simply untrue. By simply by reading the product docs the author could've avoided making the inaccurate statements made above. As it stands though, the review is so bad that it should be disregarded in total by anyone considering using VEEAM.
