Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
Veeam allows us to backup or replicate our virtual machines "VM" within minutes not hours. The replica's are working copies of our original VMs and this is great for disaster recovery. We backup onsite for quick recovery of entire servers, workstations, or just a single file. I can even get single or multiple emails from a replicated Exchange Server. Then we have an offsite backup also that can become a 2nd location in event of a building disaster. I have hourly, daily, and nightly replications of all my servers and some workstations.
- Creates a working VM copy of your VM servers
- Backup and replications are very quick once you have run it the first time. I replicated new servers that had a 127GB drive in less than 15 min because it only backs up the data, not the entire drive.
- If a backup or replication fails, you can set it to try again and that usually works. I have most of the mine set to retry 3 times.
- If there is a problem like a backup failed it will email you so you don't have to babysit it.
- Updated or upgrades can sometimes cause your backup or replications to fail, and in some cases, have to be totally recreated. I see this mostly with servers that have lots of data like 300GB of actual data.
- This software puts us in a good place with disaster certifications as we can recover or run from a 2nd location quickly.
- The cost may be high for some small businesses but they do have a limited free version
20 including servers and workstations. We have grown or doubled since buying Veeam and it has easily grown with us at no extra cost.
Having a working replica or copy of our server gives us peace of mind knowing that if something happens to our main location we have a working server offsite with replicas of everything. I have not had to use this but we have had to go in and restore single files. This could be a big thing if you ever get hit with ransomware.
Since we use the replication part of Veeam, we can easily copy one of our replicated working VMs and run it to test updates or new ideas. We have recovered files and folders that were deleted from our original server or a workstation we backup. We have recovered emails from our Exchange server by mounting the server and using Veeam's Exchange module to view mailboxes.
I chose Veeam because at the time it was the only software that would create a working copy of your server. This was great for disaster recovery as you didn't have to restore anything just run that replicated VM where it was.
