Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

Veeam is used as the core tool to back up the IT infrastructure of my organization which consists of a Hyper-V virtual machine environment. The software can be used to backup all critical Virtual Machines, send copies offsite for redundancy as part of disaster recovery measures for the worst case scenario where restores can then be done on offsite virtual hosts.
  • Backs up virtual machines.
  • Easy installation and setup to get started.
  • Relatively straightforward restore process.
  • Relatively straightforward offsite backups.
  • I find backup copies experience more errors than it should going over WAN lines which brings into question reliability. This causes this process to be monitored more closely to ensure the offsite backups are good.
  • If you need to restore to a new host machine that was not in your original infrastructure that was licensed, or new machine in a remote site, the process is a bit more difficult even though the remote host machines are licensed.
  • I have comfort knowing my most important nightly backups are reliable with Veeam.
  • I can easily restore my nightly backups if needed which gives the company the data protection it needs.
  • It can be used as part of my disaster recovery plans to help the business continue in the worst case scenario.
RIght now I execute nightly backups for 10 on-premise critical servers in my environment, with incrementals done during the week with full backups done on a weekend. Pairing the VEEAM software and current backup storage solution has worked out just fine thus far in managing and maintaining the needs of the organization when it comes to protecting data/infrastructure.
Yes. We have been able to use backup storage solutions such as Synology devices to backup machines on premise and store data with retention periods which satisfies the needs of the business. We have not tried integration with any cloud storage solutions as yet.
These features allowed my company to execute and test our backups and doing a trial run of our disaster recovery plan by ensuring the copy backup to a remote site does indeed work, where we were able to bring up a machine on the remote site, and ensuring security option such as the encryption key works, and all data was still present on the remote end. The reports and verification tests after a backup is completed also helps ensure the reliability of the backup.
Compared to ArcServer which I've used over 5+ years ago for tape backups. Veeam is a much simpler solution to interface with, setup and execute your backups. The only major drawback is having to buy different licenses for different platforms - Hyper-V, VMWare or physical machines (Windows or Linux servers). Veeam is also one of the more expensive options in the industry.
  • For disaster recover scenarios.
  • To execute/implement a company's backup policies for everyday backups.
  • To deliver offsite backups to remote locations.
