Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

We use Veeam to back up multiple physical, virtual, and private cloud systems. It was implemented to replace Backup Exec and has significantly decreased the number of hands-on work required to ensure that backups completed successfully, while also providing benefits such as data deduplication to reduce the amount of storage required for backups, and synthetic full backups which significantly reduces the backup window.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Reliable backups without the need for regular attention.
  • Synthetic full backups to reduce the backup window.
  • Data deduplication to reduce the amount of backup storage required.
  • Post-backup copies to additional storage.

Currently protecting around 10 different workloads across cloud, virtual and physical - this matches our expectations when we acquired the product as it matches the number the previous backup systems were covering.
  • Positive: Reduced troubleshooting time compared to previous backup system.
  • Positive: Backups are now reliable enough that we can be sure they work.
The trigger to change was during a renewal of our previous backup system, comparing the cost vs capability of the two systems Veeam came out significantly ahead, and during testing, the reliability had been faultless. The previous backup system also had significant reliability issues, regular failures where no fault could be found.
The ability to implement an additional cloud storage tier is extremely useful for providing additional protection from ransomware, especially with immutable storage in the cloud vs the need for air-gapped backups with physical media.
Well suited to most Windows environments, the community edition is free for people who do not have a large number of servers that need to be backed up, but has the ability to scale to much larger environments.
