Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
After attempting to use another backup solution from a SaaS provider and partner, we decided that we needed to explore an option that allowed our team to manage backups, restorations, and data storage ourselves. As a financial institution, we are tasked by our board of directors to self-host as much of our data infrastructure as possible, and the idea of having our data stored in the "cloud" was not appealing to them. We worked with one of our partners to evaluate and deploy Veeam, and we could not be happier with the outcome. We are able to control our backups and data storage, and maintain control of the backup locations. We have implemented immutable storage with another of our partners and would highly recommend Veeam, as well as Red Hat Enterprise Linux coupled with immutable storage as a long-term solution for storing essential data and ensuring that it is not compromised by a malicious actor attempting to compromise your stored information with ransomware. Installation and deployment was well documented and streamlined, and we are up and running with minimal management and engineering oversight. An excellent product and team, and we could not be happier with the final outcome.
- Virtualized workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- NAS filers
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
- Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
- License portability as your environment needs change
- Automating test restores to validate recoverability
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
- Failover or recovery scripts/plans for orchestrated recovery
- Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
Pros
- Unattended backups and replication
- Leveraging snapshots for rapid recovery
- Working with immutable storage solutions to prevent ransomware.
Cons
- Backing up over the internet to on-prem servers.

Yes
Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?
Yes
Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?
Yes
We were very thorough when preparing for our deployment of Veeam Backup & Replication, so we were very accurate in our estimates on number of endpoints and what areas we needed to cover with the product. We currently leverage Veeam for workstation, laptop, and server backups, including hypervisor and VM backups and restorations.
- Overall cost savings over other solutions
- Higher quality backups
- Better restoration options
There were several issues with the SaaS backup solution we were using that caused us to evaluate other solutions, including Veeam. Overall there was a QoS issue that was preventing several of our virtualization platforms from completing backups. There were also cost issues where the cost of the SaaS option had increased over 300% in a matter of months, even though usage had not increased.
We do not currently use these features as we have no cloud-based infrastructure. We may leverage this in the future, and that possibility was one of the reasons we chose Veeam.
We use Veeam to backup to NAS devices, but not for backing up NAS devices.
