Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
We use Veeam to back up our two VMware clusters, which allows us to protect our users and infrastructure against user error or malicious actors. Veeam’s ease of use to restore items such as SharePoint elements, tables from a database or simple files makes our job much easier and reassures users in case of an issue we can restore data quickly and efficiently.
We also make use of the Veeam tape function with a LTO library for offsite
backups.
After 5 years of using Veeam to protect our whole on-prem services and Office 365 I can’t recommend this product enough.

- Virtualized workloads
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
- NAS filers
- Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
- Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
- Automating test restores to validate recoverability
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
- Failover or recovery scripts/plans for orchestrated recovery
- Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
Pros
- Speed of backups.
- The number of applications you can restore data to.
- Ease of use
Cons
- PostgreSQL application support
- Licence changes from sockets to VULS
- More application item restore options
Do you think Veeam Data Platform delivers good value for the price?
Yes
Are you happy with Veeam Data Platform's feature set?
Yes
Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?
Yes
Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?
Yes
Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?
Yes
We currently protect over 200 virtual machines with Veeam, a high number of Linux servers but also some Microsoft, the number of virtual machines has expanded greatly since we first implemented the product in our environment, we still have socket licences currently that will allow us to expand further until support runs out and we have to switch over to VULS.
- We are a public entity so keeping user and public data safe is paramount.
- The cost and robustness of the product reassures our elected officials.
- Only negative point is when we’ll have to switch to the subscription licence model.
Before moving to Veeam, we used backup exec which was terribly slow in regards to the
time it would take to backup and restore any data. We even had a few data
losses to due issues with that product.
Veeam has been a breath of fresh air in comparison and the application-based restore
options save so much time.

We’ve investigated the NAS/File backup solution and we’re going to explore adding it to our existing infrastructure over the next year or two.
