Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

We use Veeam to backup our entire organizations data that cannot be easily retrievable or restored otherwise. This includes shared files and documents, entire VMs of domain controllers and other servers and even a few various full computer images for machines that need to be set up in a very specific way. Not every employee in a non-profit industry such as this is incredibly tech savvy. Couple that with the fact that as a non-profit, we generally cannot afford to keep all of our technology on the cutting edge, sometimes things happen and files get lost, or deleted, or corrupted. Veeam has made it a breeze for me to restore those files, systems or virtual machines with the click of a couple of buttons. This saves potentially weeks or months of work being lost due to a small mistake or a large catastrophic failure. And with the replication feature, it's easy to save multiple copies of the backed up files, as well as keep multiple iterations of the backups going back a specific amount of time. This software has saved my life (and quite possibly my job) dozens of times over the years and I am extremely pleased at having made the decision to move to it when I did.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • Failover or recovery scripts/plans for orchestrated recovery
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Virtual Machine restores. Whether a full over-write, being moved to a new location, or a live restore, it's quick and easy.
  • Ease of browsing for individual files that may need to be restored due to a minor mistake.
  • Very easy to test restores to make sure everything is still working.
  • The UI isn't terrible, but it could definitely be better.
  • The initial opening of the software takes several minutes, and could potentially be optimized for faster loading.
  • In-program tutorials to help walk new people through processes that can get complicated.

3 Virtual, 2 physical. A little more than when it was first purchased, but we've expanded since then and added new systems that needed to be backed up more securely than they were initially, such as a new parking gate server and endpoint, a new baremetal hypervisor server, and others.
  • Can make backup and recovery from failure or mistakes almost instantaneous.
  • Has saved a lot of money in labor from having to rebuild systems or even recreate work that was lost
  • Even smaller problems with some virtual machines can be easily resolved by just restoring to a previous point that was working. As the configuration of these machines do not change often.
Several years ago, when we switched from separate baremetal servers to hosting multiple VMs on a single physical machines, Veeam became the best choice for backup in that situation over the software we were using before. This is also when we added multiple backup points to create redundancy for security purposes.
We have not yet begun to implement cloud backup services, as the cost of them is not conducive to the business we have. We do have regular replication to a location offsite to help mitigate this, and we will eventually take advantage of the cloud features when it becomes more neccessary and cost effective.
We have a large internal file share that gets backed up consistently to prevent the loss of any work. Veeam has allowed me to instantly restore any data that was lost or corrupted due to end user mistakes or crashing systems, etc. It has saved hours and days of work.
Pulseway, Daxko Operations, Webroot Antivirus + Internet Security Complete (SecureAnywhere)
If you need relatively easy to setup and forget backups to go to multiple places, this is the best bet, hands down. If you need to get into things a little more complicated, it can get tricky as you will most likely have to turn to the internet to figure out exactly how something needs to be done.
