Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
I use the Veeam Data Platform to back up all the data in my organization, both local and cloud, and to set up disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity (BC) plans. Before Veeam Data Platform, I had to use multiple applications for each type of data. Now, with Veeam Data Platform, I can do everything with just one application.
Pros
- Backup data everywhere (NAS, computers, file servers, virtual machines)
- restore data in two clicks
- Check if the data has been corrupted by ransomware
Cons
- UI is little old
- Improving the update of Windows services for Veeam Data Platform is currently not easy when you have multiple Veeam version servers.
- ADD option for offline backup
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- NAS filers
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
- Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
- Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
- Accessing data for data mining or re-use of backup copies via API
- Failover or recovery scripts/plans for orchestrated recovery
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
Currently, Veeam Data Platform protects 30 virtual servers 10 physical workload initially and hundreds of mailboxes and 5 NAS. The plan was to protect fewer, but it works so well that we agreed to protect all our resources just in case and the cost difference to protected all was not so big
- The math was easy to do. Veeam Data Platform costs us almost 15k euros annually. We estimate the loss of money for just one day lost due to a major issue to be 60k euros.
- We can safely declare to our investors that we have a working PRA plan in place
Before Veeam Data Platform, we used free software for backups, but there were too many limitations and bugs. The major issue was that we had to use different software to back up all our data, which was a nightmare to keep running. Finally, when we had to migrate our network to another location (Cloud Meraki), a budget was allocated to us to buy professional software to replace all the free backup software in place. This was a breakthrough because, with fewer people, we can now back up and monitor all our system
At first, we focused all our time on setting up backups for local data like servers, file systems, and NAS. The issue was that we neglected the data on the cloud. This was a mistake we had to correct Data Platform, which now works with cloud resource workloads. We have the key to correct our issue. and we set up a disaster recovery in the cloud just in case too
We have a lot of NAS. The issue was that it was difficult to back up this data before Veeam Data Platform. Even with RAID storage, something can happen like ransomware or a physical issue. Now, with Veeam Data Platform, it's very easy to resolve this issue. It's like backing up a server. We even set up a replication to another NAS just in case.ation to another nas just in case
Synology Active Backup Suite can do backups, but it has too many limitations in terms of capabilities like PRA, restore orchestrator, data compression to save space, ransomware protections, and immutable backups. All these features can be used in Veeam Data Platform. In terms of speed, Veeam Data Platform can do more with less time and CPU usage.
