Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
We use Veeam Data Platform to backup and replicate virtual servers that are used in our manufacturing business. We also backup some critical desktops using this software in order to accelerate recovery times in the case of a hardware failure. We utilize Veeam Data Platform Backup Copy feature to copy backup files off site to facilitate recovery if our main location if compromised (fire, flood, tornado, electrical surge, etc.).
Pros
- Backup of virtual machines
- Replication of virtual machines to alternate hosts
- Backup of desktop PC's
- Restoration of backed up files or entire machines
- Failover to replica virtual machines
Cons
- Veeam Data Platform no longer supports as large of a range of OS versions for VM's being backed up or replicated
- Failover options to replicas can be confusing to select the correct options
- Load time for console can be random. Generally, not a big issue though.
- Virtualized workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
- License portability as your environment needs change
- Automating test restores to validate recoverability
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
- Failover or recovery scripts/plans for orchestrated recovery
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
Our environment protects about 30 workloads using Veeam Data Platform. This has grown over the years we've been using Veeam Data Platform. We're utilizing the socket-based licensing which allows us to protect unlimited workloads that run on the number of sockets licensed. This is more workloads than we originally planned as we've added new software products and servers to our environment over the years.
- Luckily, we have not needed entire machine recovery very often.
- We utilize file level recovery frequently to save time rebuilding a file that was modified, corrupted, or accidentally deleted.
- We lean on this product to protect our business and see it as a very inexpensive form of insurance to protect the livelihood of our business and all our employees and customers.
Our business migrated to using Veeam Data Platform when I started working here. At that same time, the infrastructure was changed from one, physical server, to multiple physical hosts running many virtualized workloads and replicating the workloads across physical hosts. This also included the change from a basic disc to disc backup to a disc to multiple disc backup in multiple locations. The previous method required someone to physically take the backups off site each day. Veeam Data Platform allows this to be automated to a remote storage location (can be physical or cloud hosted).
Our company does not currently utilize any of the cloud backup services included in Veeam Data Platform Backup & Replication. Our business isn't as reliant on some of these technologies and has no regulatory body that would require backups of data from them. It is an area we keep an eye on and are confident that Veeam Data Platform has us covered if we move in that direction in the future.
Our organization has not used any of the NAS protection features. Our NAS appliances have their own tools to accomplish these same goals. We have relied on the native processes of these devices for the present. These tools would and become essential if we migrate to a different NAS product or end up with NAS products from different manufacturers.
Veeam Data Platform has always met and exceeded our minimum requirements for features. They have stayed up-to-date and ahead of the technologies in the industry. Competition always seems to fall short in features, usability, support, or pricing.
