Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
We use Veeam Backup and Replication to secure contant, encrypted backups as well as immutable backups to secure our data in the unlikely event of a ransomware attack. Using a 3-2-1 standard for backups, Veeam has improved our overall security and peace of mind. Veeam is likely the biggest name in backup, and as such, we feel very good about our choice.
Pros
- Immutable Backups
- Encrytped Backups
- Restore to AWS and Azure VMs
- Unattended backups
Cons
- Dashboard layout
- In-app help and assistance
- Documentation!
- Virtualized workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
- NAS filers
- Automating test restores to validate recoverability
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
- Failover or recovery scripts/plans for orchestrated recovery
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
Veeam is currently protecting 5 virtual workloads; this is much more than originally anticipated, however the ease of being able to grow and protect more workloads than originally planned shows the resilience of the Veeam Data Platrform. There was no second thought about where we would protect additional workloads when we realized we wanted them to run in our virtual envirnment - if it isn't broken, and it works wonderfully, why would we look for a different solution?
- Positive impact due to overall cost of the product;
- No expectation of rising values over time
- ROI was exceeded 300% since Veeam's inception
As the very first IT Administrator (in-house, on property), having found the hodge-podge of barely functional backups being run, failing, and having no valuable log for passes and failures, I started looking at Veeam first and foremost. As I've used Veeam at multiple other companies, it was a no-brainer to look here first. Veeam provides an easy gateway to get started with minimal effort, and then once you can understand and decypher the featureset, it becomes more of a joy than ever!
As we currently do not place backpus in the cloud, this has not been of interest to us. With that said, the ability to literally restore on of our workloads to Azure (which we use for other things) or AWS is startling and simple. We can be back up and running after catastrophic failure fast, and with minimal intervention.
We do not currently backup our NAS, as it is actually our backup repository and nothng else. Veeams ability to seamlessly work with our Synology has broven valuable to us, as we know we have two major names working together to secure us.
In all honesty, we use BOTH Veeam and Synology Active Backup as part of our backup solution; each has it's strengths and both work very well together. As there is no additional cost to use both, we are very satisfed with the variety.
