Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

We use Veeam to back up VMware and stand-alone clients. We need to have our business-critical devices back online within an hour (RTO) and to have no more than 15 minutes of our past processes lost (RPO). Veeam also allows us to test code by restoring production servers into a test environment and to apply changes without risking our production servers. This is invaluable for accurate and timely fixes and improvements.

Pros

  • The ease of use in creating jobs and adding clients enables our new and less skilled administrators to work efficiently, quickly, and accurately.
  • The same ease of use is essential for junior admins as well. Backups are quickly and accurately restored, allowing our networking team to bring clients back to production within expected times.
  • The ability to create a restore for testing and to remove it quickly has proven to be an excellent asset for our production and DB teams.

Cons

  • They could simplify the On-demand Sandbox capabilities. The current setup seems overly complicated and is not very performant.
  • I would like to see more documentation on how to use Veeam with Proxmox, as that is the platform we are moving to.
  • I would like the ability to see more detail in the failure logs, as the reports from the Veeam Backup and Restore client aren't very helpful. Some way to easily access the log in a parsed format would help with the (few) difficulties we've had.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Utilizing backup copies for secondary purposes via DataLabs
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
We are currently backing up approximately 30 Windows and Linux servers, as well as about 50 production workstations, in our warehouse. As the company's needs grow, we have been able to meet their demands in both the workstation and server areas. Clients can be easily added to jobs, and we can obtain protection with little notice for new devices.
  • A day's outage can cost us over $100,000 in our production facility. Our ability to bring devices online quickly can save us tens of thousands of dollars.
  • I cannot quantify the losses we'd incur if we were to lose our ability to ship our product. Still, our reputation would undoubtedly take a hit these days of immediate ratings and commenting.
When I was hired on, the company had relied on an MSP to manage all facets of the server/workstation infrastructure, and this included backups. The cost of this MSP managing our backup/recovery was an almost crippling cost, especially considering that their response time was abysmal and they processes were undocumented and, frankly, didn't work. I immediately saw this as a strategic weakness and used an old NAS and the free version of Veeam to create backups of our most critical servers. After a failure of these servers and the MSP's inability to get it back, I was proven correct in my move to try Veeam. I was able to quickly restore the server and get us back into production without ever having used the software before. I was able to secure funding after showing the cost savings of new disk infrastructure and Veeam licensing.
We have a simple use case, so our cloud usage is to use it as off-line storage for immutable cloud buckets. It has worked well, and thankfully, we haven't needed to restore, but we are glad that the option is there.
We do not use this capability.
Commvault is a standard backup platform for Enterprise backups, but we have no need for its extensive client abilities or the staff for the vast infrastructure that is required to use it. Cohesity is a truly fantastic system, but it is too far for larger companies than the one that I work for. Its cost also makes it prohibitive for SME's like us. Norton Backup was so long ago, I don't know if it even exists. It was difficult to use, had very slow recovery times, and I don't miss it at all.

Do you think Veeam Data Platform delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Veeam Data Platform's feature set?

Yes

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

I have been a Sysadmin for 3 decades and have used all manner of backup software and systems. I'm now at a place where our needs are not all that great, but my experience with other platforms has allowed the company greater flexibility in restores and, more importantly, in testing and quality assurance of our in-house software. As a small company, we have relatively simple needs, and Veeam has met all of our requirements, so I cannot say that they are deficient in any way.
