Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
Veeam Data Platform data platform is used for back up services. It enables us to back up of critical systems and data. It has been utilized only for virtual machines but ideally we want to leverage more features to allow thorough back up capabilities. The customizable rules for back up makes automating back up jobs simple and easy to implement.
Pros
- Back up jobs
- Data retention
- Automation
- Cataloging
Cons
- Include Machine learning capabilities
- Faster response times
- Updates to UI
- Virtualized workloads
- Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
- In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- Enterprise UNIX servers running Solaris & IBM AIX
- Enterprise applications such as Oracle or SAP HANA
- Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
- Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
- License portability as your environment needs change
- Automating test restores to validate recoverability
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
- Failover or recovery scripts/plans for orchestrated recovery
- Automating test restores to validate recoverability
There are roughly about 20 workloads being protected by Veeam Data Platform. This is more so what was expected when Veeam Data Platform was acquired. Additional back up solutions were purchased with other workloads to have some separations in protection and prevent vendor locking. As we move towards the cloud the cloud based solutions such as Azure back up and AWS back up are utilized.
- ROI and cost flexibility
- Automation
- Ease of use
Veeam Data Platform was there before I joined though I have advocated towards moving to DRaaS using Veeam Data Platform. I’ve used Veeam Data Platform quite extensively and it has been really easy to use compared to other back up solutions. The ease of use makes it stand out compared to many other providers and that is my big take away.
Since Veeam Data Platform is mainly being used for disk to disk to cloud it has provided some simplicity in establishing the back up architecture as needed for the organization. Keeping aligned with leadership direction while meeting the necessary capabilities needed for a good back up solution has been a critical driving factor for storing back ups for Disaster recovery.
Not much is being done for unstructured data. It’s nice that Veeam Data Platform does offer this feature but right now it’s mainly VM snapshots
Veeam Data Platform does well compared to the products I listed above. Though ived used them in different scenarios and all are great tools. In my opinion, Veeam Data Platform was by far the easiest to utilize and implement.
