Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
We are using Veeam to ensure business continuety. With the speed at wich Veeam execute backups, you can ensure all servers are backed up everyday. Veeam immutability also ensures that all backups are protected against ransomeware attacks. Veeam dedup and compression safes on expensive storage allowing for backus to be kept for longer,
Pros
- Deduplication of data.
- Compression of backed up data.
- Scheduling of backup jobs.
- One backup allowing multiple types of restores.
Cons
- Veeam quick recovery for Platform9 hypervisor.
- Less false positives where certain activities on Linux servers are registered as malicious.
- Virtualized workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
- NAS filers
- Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
60 workloads are currently being protected. At firtst Veeam only supported virtual workload backups which was a severe limitation in a environment where physical workloads are sometimes required. This forced us to use other vendor platforms for physical workload backups. The Veeam agents allowed one platform to be used for backups.
- The ability to recover fully after a ransomeware attack with as little business impact as possible is priceless.
- Knowing that your workloads are protected brings peace of mind for backup administrators.
- The ability to backup any workload running on any platform and being able to restore to dissimilar hardware is very valuble with the ever changing hardware challenges.
Previous backup vendor software you had to do many different types of backups. One for file recovery and one for system recovery. When you have a lot of servers and small backup windows this pose a huge challenge. Veeam's flexible backup schedule also made a huge improvement. Last but not least, Veeam supporting the native snapshot technology from most well known vendors played a massive roll in ensuring backups having little to no impact on production while doing backups.
Veeam's compatiblity with Google Cloud Platform ensured that we could comply with the 3-2-1 rule and being able to offload backups to a cloud platform we are already fimiliar with. Being a Google Workspace customer this plays a huge role since we're already have access to the platform and are fimiliar with the workings of it.
We ahve not utilized this yet. This will be the next chapter to be introduced.
- Arctera Backup Exec
I worked with Symantec Backup Exec when it was still focused on backing up physical workloads. Veeam was then introduced and was designed from the ground up for the protection of virtual workloads. No other solution known to me could then compete with Veeam so it was a no brainer after testing the platform. Since then, the value and capibilities of the product just kept on growing giving me no reason to consider changing to another vendor.
