Overall Satisfaction with Vertex
Vertex O is being used in the US and Canada for both sales and purchases. It is not used globally. We use it for sales, purchases and exemption certificates.
- Rates for sales.
- Allows multiple flex fields to help correctly determine taxability.
- Updates the tax rules when the change in a state.
- A trusted vendor doesn't work the best.
- We have an issue with the tax drivers, for us, it is material groups and that isn't always taxed in the same manner across states.
- Vertex does not have the best global platform yet, needs to improve LAO, especially Brazil capability.
- To date, the ECM has helped us avoid audit assessments in various states because we now have all the certificates.
- Too early to know about the purchasing side since we have only had O Series for 1.5 years and not been audited for that period.
- Tax content support
- Tax accuracy
On our tax team it is critical to accurately tax both sales and purchases. Must better to tax on the front end and avoid interest and penalty during audits.
- Product Features
- Prior Experience with the Product
We have used Vertex Q previously so we are familiar with the company and know their reputation.

- We are using it to tax the inventory at consumption.
Vertex is working with the team to understand how the accelerator works.

Evaluating Vertex and Competitors
Vertex Implementation
- Third-party professional services
Ryan
Change management was a small part of the implementation and was well-handled - Communication and testing are the biggest things to focus on during implementation.
- getting representation from all the different workstream to perform testing
- finding master data to use in the testing for all the different regions, development and quality.
Vertex Training
- No Training
Training would be beneficial especially if you are a first time user.
Configuring Vertex
It is must easier to use Vertex without special configuration, but unless your master data is very detailed that will probably be unavoidable
No - we have not done any customization to the interface
Yes - we have added extensive custom code - All of the custom code had to be added by third party consultants.
the custom updates were driving by not having material groups with enough details, all too broad to attach rules to

Relationship with Vertex Inc.
The negotiations with the vendor were mostly driven by procurement, but the tax team was responsible for negotiating the add-ons like accelerator and the exemption certificate manager. We also chose on-premise rather than cloud based.
Be sure you understand how the vendor works within your business. We prefer Vertex because of there strong tax strength with manufacturers. Ask for a list of other companies with the same footprint that uses their software.
