1Password

The price point for 1Password for personal and family use is fairly reasonable. It is suited for those individuals who have a lot of passwords to keep track of. If you only have a few passwords (i.e. 20 or less), there might be other options for you that are free (e.g., KeePass). If you utilize passwords for logins on the web, entering identifying information, saving passwords for the multi-apps that a user might have on their phone, then 1Password would be an ideal solution. For businesses, the ability to create 2-factor authentication protection, have an admin control to view and manage permissions, and have unlimited shared faults, will be useful for those organizations or businesses with multi-users.

HashiCorp Vault

HashiCorp Vault, in my opinion, is a defacto standard for any cloud or automation implementation. They're the best of the best as far as products for secrets management and the ability to use it against relatively any service you have is unheard of for other products. HashiCorp has really taken out all the stops when it comes to creating a nice, extensible tool that people can use to suit their needs.

Pros

1Password

  • 1Password's Watchtower service is a real value add - 1Password monitors the security news for evidence of security breaches containing your credentials and alerts you if you have been impacted. That is a huge value as it enables you to get out in front of a security breach and be proactive in protecting yourself.
  • 1Password's core strength is that it makes it easy to practice good security hygiene by using strong, unique passwords for each site you interact with. This is something that all password managers do now, but offering an easy experience is key.
  • 1Password's password sharing features makes it easy to share team credentials with other team members, and to decide who amongst the team gets access to the designated credentials.

HashiCorp Vault

  • The HTTP API you use to write and read secrets is open and can be used by any application.
  • It keeps our sensitive data/credentials out of our GitLab repositories.
  • Sealing and unsealing the Vault on demand adds an additional layer of security.

Cons

1Password

  • The automatic name generation for a saved login is sometimes redundant, if the site's title is improperly written
  • Sometimes random logins pop up and I have to choose manually, which is tedious sometimes.
  • I would love to be able to pin or star frequently used logins, when I have multiple logins to a site.

HashiCorp Vault

  • Documentation could be better.
  • The multiple key unseal process can be a problem if the need arises.
  • It would make more sense if HashiCorp Vault combined with HashiCorp Consul to create a unique product.

HashiCorp Vault is the best there is out there, and it has become critical to our secret management use cases. It would be difficult to find anything that would suit our needs better and that would be beneficial for us to switch over to.

Usability

The 1Password app design is top notch, much better than a couple other password managers I've looked at. The app and service are very flexible, allowing for many different types of data storage. The browser extensions generally work very well, allowing for easy access to login information while using pretty much any modern web browser.

We spent a little more time than we imagined to conceptually understand how HashiCorp Vault operates, as well as how it is configured. This is not trivial, and keep in mind that you will need to take some time to get a thorough understanding of the tool. The documentation could be more helpful in this regard.

I have never had any issues with 1Password and they have always been able to answer my questions adequately resolve my issues. Furthermore, they have a robust peer forum that can be accessed. They have helpful "Get to know Apps", videos and many articles to assist in the process of using the product.

Hashicorp has been very responsive to our questions and inquiries up to this point. We are currently working on them to develop a more granular permissions model within Vault. We are very close to achieving our objectives with the help of their support team. We do not seem to be in the same time zone which makes it hard for escalated issues.

Alternatives Considered

1Password

A chief marketplace competitor to 1Password is LastPass. While it is highly regarded and includes some features that 1Password currently doesn't (such as secure sharing), it fell victim to a substantial security breach in 2015, which has made me loathe to reconsider it.Another well-known password manager is Dashlane, which also provides secure sharing, but falls short of 1Password in that it does not provide application password management.1Password is continuously being improved, and the price I pay annually for a family account is more than fair.

HashiCorp Vault

As mentioned before, HashiCorp Vault really is the best in its class. Having used other secrets management tools, HashiCorp has really made Vault the easiest to use in a cross-compatibility function, in a multi-cloud/hybrid environment, and in multiple fashions. Many other tools simply solve a single problem (like encrypted data bags within Chef) but do not help with cross-application compatibility. Using HashiCorp Vault, it's easy to integrate everything through it so you do not have any secrets being exposed. It also gives you a single standardized process so there isn't much guesswork. That alone can aid in making your environment more secure.

Return on Investment

1Password

  • Time savings - I don't spend much (hardly any, actually) time looking up passwords anymore.
  • Security - A lack of it can be costly for any company, am I right?
  • Mobility - even when working from home, or at a coffee shop, my secure data is always in my pocket. This gives me the flexibility I need to do my job well, even when unforeseen circumstances like the kids getting sick take me away from my primary work environment.

HashiCorp Vault

  • Helped us reach our security compliance goals.
  • Helped us strengthen our security position in our infrastructure by improving on poor secret management practices.
