Likelihood to Recommend

1Password

I use it for all my work logins, every single one of them! We manage content providers and advertiser accounts, for some sites, there are 20 logins. There are also services we only use occasionally, remembering the login details for those, or looking them up in an unsafe spreadsheet would be a nightmare. I even contemplated using it for my private logins and all my family accounts - despite having Google store them all, because Google stores them in plain text and I don't really like that

RSA Access Manager (Discontinued)

The RSA was originally brought in for 2-factor authentication, which was used in conjunction with our internal Active Directory. This allowed us to secure our remote user connections and our internal user connections for PCI access. Later we tied it into ISE for secure wireless access.

Pros

1Password

  • 1Password works very well across all popular platforms, including desktop and mobile apps, as well as various web browser integrations, providing a convenient and consistent method to access your logins and passwords no matter what device you're currently using.
  • 1Password provides a powerful, yet straightforward, mechanism for the creation of strong passwords of varying lengths and criteria: if you normally use 24-character passwords but your latest account can only support 16-character lengths, just tweak the password length slider. If your latest account forces you to use special characters, just toggle the checkbox to ensure that need is met.
  • 1Password supports Apple Touch ID on iOS and MacOS, and Face ID on iOS, allowing authorized users secure, but easy, access to their credentials, and obviating the need for frequent typing out of long passphrases.
  • 1Password continues to provide iterative updates to their products which ensure ever-improving auto-fill integrations with website logins and mobile app logins.

  • Used in conjunction with our Active Directory for 2-factor authentication
  • The virtual RSA token for multiple devices makes it easy to avoid needing a physical device
  • The ability to leverage real-time analytics to identify when step-up is required

Cons

1Password

  • The price is relatively exorbitant for your average user. I confess that I am using it based on a free license I got from working at Apple several years back; even loving this software as much as I do, $50 for a single license is a steep ask, especially in today's world of free applications
  • The interface has not been updated in quite a while. Not that it is bad, per se, and is very utilitarian, but a small facelift would be nice

Usability

The 1Password app design is top notch, much better than a couple other password managers I've looked at. The app and service are very flexible, allowing for many different types of data storage. The browser extensions generally work very well, allowing for easy access to login information while using pretty much any modern web browser.

I haven't had a lot of issues with 1Password in the past, but I have browsed the 1Password support forums a bit when I have needed an answer for something. The support staff seems to be very responsive. They seem to respond to pretty much everything posted in the support forums.

Alternatives Considered

1Password

LastPass is a good free password manager for those just getting started. Its simple ability to share and manage passwords all in the cloud makes it an obvious alternative to 1Password. The only challenge is that it is browser based. For us, we needed a setup that allowed an app to be downloaded on a users' computer as well as their mobile devices for easier access to information and shared resources. 1Password fit the bill because we were impressed with the Dropbox integration and apps that sync in real time to give users updated login info.

Nothing as this point. At the end of 2019 we plan to start looking into alternatives

Return on Investment

1Password

  • 1Password is truly an investment in the future of one's business, so while it is difficult to run the numbers on this topic, I have not had a single compromised login on any site which I store in 1Password, which provides peace of mind.
  • 1Password's randomized password generator has provided me with a much better format to create and securely store my online passwords. As opposed to storing them in a document or spreadsheet with or without a simple passcode on them, I now experience higher-level security to my banking and other cloud applications.
  • 1Password allows multiple users to quickly access passwords without needing to wait for others' permissions to do so. It also makes for easy controls when people enter and leave an Organization, which is a time saver.

RSA Access Manager (Discontinued)

  • Security with 2-factor authentication is a positive
  • Negative would be the updating the client when token expires
  • the real-time monitoring is a life saver, with accurate notifications
