Acronis
The services are easy to learn and manage. The support team is very competent and resolves my issues that come s up easily. As a business partner, they are proactive in offering solutions and help to improve what we are doing. They are always there for engineering solutions that we are not sure how to do.

Komprise
As any other archiving solution, it is very well suited for environments with a large footprint of unstructured data (CIFS / NFS shares for user data) with a large amount of unused/old files and a need to keep those unused files for long term. In our scenario, due to some legal and contractual constraints we need to keep these files for 15 years. Archiving is a good choice to move the unused files to a cheaper storage tier, both on-prem or cloud.

Komprise
  • It gives you a good overview on user data: files age, sizes, file types, owners, etc.
  • It is very flexible on the archiving policies.
  • The data scans are really fast without affecting storage's performance.
  • It has a great alternative to STUB files, which they call 'bread crumbs' (symlinks to files).

Cons
Acronis
  • The website is pretty slow and will kick you off sometimes. I know they are working on this. For now, this is the biggest problem we have with Acronis.
  • Their support team isn't great. It can take a while to get an issue resolved, although issues do not happen frequently.

  • Its licensing plan, which takes into account the amount of data analyzed instead of data transferred.

They recently raised the pricing for backup usage and our price has nearly doubled. It is still lower than some other vendors, but we might review other options before renewing next year.

Support has been helpful when we have had to reach out. We have not had to contact support that much so I do not have much feedback on them. I met the support team at the Cyber Summit and they are all very nice, smart individuals.

Price! All the services have low entry points and then hit you with big fees. Acronis Advanced Backup provides better management and control of your cost then the other services we evaluated. We have tested a number of solutions not on the list that have are price competitive, but the support was lacking.

We have used Veritas Enterprise Vault in the past, and besides its being a well-known player on the data archiving market, their tool is far more complex to implement, to manage and to keep working. Komprise is very robust and also very easy to implement, as most part of the job is done on Komprise side. The management console is delivered through a public URL as a SaaS platform. You only need to deploy a few VMs for scan/archiving/user access, which they call "Observer VMs." Komprise also doesn't uses Stub files, which is a poor implementation adopted by the competitor for file access. We had a lot of issues in the past with stub files. Komprise has implemented 'bread crumbs', which are CIFS symlinks to the files on the Observer. It is a very good implementation and it works really well.

Return on Investment
Acronis
  • We have been able to further develop our customerbase and and more MSP as our partners
  • Overall the recurring revenue coming from Acronis, will help us to increase revenue and margin, without investing in new hardware and save on energy-cost.
  • It is time consuming to implement Acronis into our system and train our employees. With this there is also cost involved, but we believe in the long-term investements we make here.

Komprise
  • It allowed us to free up some space on our main storage during a time where we didn't have the budget to expand it.
  • It allows us to move unused data to a cheaper storage tier (Azure Blobs).
